I would recommend a great waterproof pair from Orion. Not too expensive
( $109) and fits into your vest pocket. They don't have great eye relief
(13mm) which means if you wear glasses you have to take them off to get
a full field of view- But they are pretty hardy and have BAK4 prisms-good
quality. I have used mine for 3 years with no problems.

go to binoculars then compact look for the Otter brand name

Eagle Optics is some folks up in Madison, Wisconsin who import binoculars
for sale under their tradename [Swift does the same thing] that are a very
good deal, with high-quality optics, and they DO have long-eye-relief
models! Anyone who wears glasses really SHOULD have true long-eye-relieve
binoculars, they are WONDERFUL!

Boat US has a nice pair of Tasco Binoculars for a
great price right now. The local store didn't know
about the sale but honored it when I asked (and
insisted that they check the web page). I am very
happy with the purchase.

They work great even with my glasses on (if I fold the
eyecups back). I don't know if I will keep them
adjusted for use with glasses or without, but they
work fine either way. The calibrated eyepieces can be
set quickly once you know what diopter setting is best
for you (+2 for me).

I also used the $10 off card that came in the mail the
other day (required a $100 purchase, but I needed some
other stuff any way). The card also was for a free
rigging knife with a $75 purchase, so I got the $10
off and the knife in addition to the already good
price.

I had tried these binoculars before and considered
them at full price. At this price I couldn't resist.

I really bought them for use on the sailboat, but I
will probably use them in the kayak as well.

I have no connection with Boat US other than as a
customer.

Check them out at:

Long-eye-relief is MEASURABLE and this should be STATED by any reputable
maker; at a minimum, I believe, eye-relief of 19 mm is needed for
glasses-wearers; more is better.

Bill,

I am not sure why this comment was directed at my post
since I included reasonably detailed specs for the
binoculars that I recommended, including eye relief
(20 mm). Unless maybe I missed your point.

I almost ordered these last night, but I am wondering where on earth I
would store them?! I paddle (whatever the term is)..."low" style... close to
the deck. Would the mesh bag I am thinking of getting hold them? The idea
here is to be able to paddle the Mississippi River, where you cannot fool
around, you have to be totally focused all the time. I am trying to cut down
on deck clutter. I would certainly enjoy a nice pair of binoculars, but they
are useless if I cannot easily get to them. You folks who have nice big
binocs, where do you put them?
I might eventually turn into a birdwatcher, but that is not my main
focus. (It might be worth becoming a birdwatcher just to join in making up
the names...."That's a Wank-Webbed Cypress Nifter" <G>)
  thanks AGAIN Marsanne

I wrote a second post on this topic because I thought the first one was
lost. Now I see it, about 2 seconds after I re-wrote and re-sent it. So,
sorry for any confusion. Marsanne

As I said I bought mine mostly for use on the
sailboat, but..

I plan to carry them in a waterproof bag in the kayak
when conditions are such that they are likely to get
wet and unlikely to be used. They will be in my lap
with the skirt open or around my neck in calm
conditions when I am observing the wildlife.

This pretty much negates their use when conditions are
less than benign, but that isn't how I plan to use
them in the kayak, so I can live with it.

Ideally I would like to have a way to store the
binoculars, a 35 mm SLR, and a few lenses in a deck
bag that is completely waterproof, stays out of the
way, and allows silent, lightning quick access.
Unfortunately no bag I have found meets those
requirements. :)

Pete
