Have an upcoming trip and would appreciate any suggestions for airport
reading.
Thinking of a good narrative of a kayaking expedition or adventure.

Thanks in advance for all suggestions!

If you can find it - "Kayak Full of Ghosts" by Lawrence Millman. It is
out of print but can often be found through Amazon.com or on eBay. It is
a collection of Inuit tales, some as short as a few paragraphs and none
longer than a few pages. Easy airport reading except that people will
look at you when you laugh out loud at stories about the man whose penis
hung down to his knees or the voice in the shitpile or the guy who got
all the girls by impressing them with his ability to shoot narwals in a
really unusual manner. There are also a lot of non-sexual/scatalogical
stories. They give a really good impression of what life must have been
like for the first kayakers. I had to buy a bunch as gifts because
everyone I loaned the book to refused to return it.

Get Chris Duff's new book - Southern Exposure about his solo circumnavigation
around New Zealand's south Island in 2000.

Rowing To Latitude: Journeys Along the Arctic's Edge

Not edited all that well but I found this book very interesting for what the
author had to say about paddling and long trips and foreign coasts and
different cultures.

Some of her trips are really extraordinary and she has paddled/rowed a hell
of a long way.

Not Kayaking but try 'The Unlikely Voyage of Jack De Crow' It is about an
Australian teacher who sails/paddles a mirror Dinghy from North Wales to the
Back Sea. An excellent read.

I'll second "Rowing to Latitude" (Fredston) and "Homelands" (Byron
Ricks) -- the latter for its writing and the former for the amazing things
they did. "Homelands" is invigorating, poignant, and solid. I loved the
careful way Byron treated disappearing cultures in Alaska -- white and
native both.

Bill Weitzel's rec of a narrative by a woman who soloed the Inside Passage
must be for "Spirited Waters" by Jennifer Hahn. It is a hell of a book --
well written, and full of the spirit of place I identify with the Pacific
Northwest. Jennifer has plenty of adventures, and is very much in tune with
the natural environment. And, I learned a new way to do roasted spuds!

G'Day,

Can anyone remember the title of a book about someone who tried to follow
the journey of Brendan from Ireland to the New World in a small boat.

All the best, PeterO

Hi all,
> Can anyone remember the title of a book about someone who tried to follow

The Brendan voyage, by Tim Severin. Tim is a nautical historian who has made a lot of
voyages in historical crafts. All his books are very interesting and well written. And from
a scientific viewpoint much more sound than Thor Heyerdahl.
Some other titles:
-The spice islands voyage. In search of Alfred Wallace.
-The Jason voyage: The quest for the golden fleece
-The Ulysses Voyage: Sea Search for the Odyssey
-In Search of Moby Dick: Quest for the White Whale

Some other tips:
Homelands, by Byron Ricks. About a trip with two kayaks down the inside passage from
Glacier bay to Puget Sound. Well written. Moving account of disappearing cultures, and
of the impact of logging and other human enterprise on the coastal environment.

A boat in our bagage. Around the world with a kayak, by Maria Coffey.
A folding kayak trip at varous places around the globe. Well written, with a fine eye for
people.

Baidarka, the kayak, by George Dyson.
Brilliant book with beautifull photographs about the history of the baidarka. Actually not
airport reading: to beautifull to stow in a backpack.

That is it for the moment. I must have a better look at my bookshelves.

Greetings,
Merijn

There is Tim Severin's "The Brendan Voyage" (both book and video), in which
he recreates the voyage. But it is certainly not a small boat, so is there
another book that your thinking of?

G'day Paul and Wes,
Thanks for the reference, its probably right as I had only the vaguest
of recollections of a conversation in a bar on what sounded like an
intriguing story. I'm becoming interested in that period of history and will
certainly go chase the book.

All the best, PeterO

The Brendan Voyage by Timothy Severin
Modern Library; ISBN: 0375755241

Great book. Severin and a crew built an exact replica of a sixth-century
leather-hulled sailing ship and recreated the legendary voyage.
