Ok a silly question probably, but I just got my first wet suit: Am I
supposed to be nekkid under this thing? I know the surfers don't wear
anything under their's cuz they're alway changing on the highway, but what
of more modest folk. Doesn't seem to be much that would be too comfortable
under there.

As a suggestion, check out a lycra skin at your local dive shop. Makes the
wet suit easy to don and remove and may keep the wind chill away as well. I
wear a Speedo for diving under the skin and wet suit. I don't wear a wet
suit for paddling unless the water temp is below 70 heh heh! And that never
happens here.

I am only a little modest but in many places getting nekkid can mean
getting arrested.

I also work as a commercial diver and on days when I will (or might)
be diving I wear compression shorts under my work clothes. These are
like bike shorts without the extra padding. They fit tight and smooth
under the wet suit and dry quickly so I don't even need to change out of
them for the drive home.
The best price I have found is in the sporting good section at WallMart.

I have a pair of Speedo Swim Trunks. They are not the "brief" style, but are
like Short bike shorts, with no padding. Work well, and make changing much
easier more discrete.

On that note, I also have two towels, sewn togehter to make a "poncho" with
armholes and a head hole. Works great.

I made myself a pair of shorts with Polartec AquaShell (nylon lycra
outside and fleece inside). They are cut just like bike shorts so
wandering around a parking area is acceptable. They sell similar
shorts in most paddling shops - they are made of neoprene or fuzzy
rubber (another form of AquaShell) usually.

I like the fleece as it provides a bit of air between me and the FJ
even if I've been quite wet. Better than sitting in a puddle. It's
also warmer than a regular bathing suit. In hot weather, I wear
these shorts on their own, just because they don't feel clingy-wet
like a nylon bathing suit.

If it gets too warm, I just wear a bathing suit under the FJ - shorts
style with pockets and such. If it's even cooler, I wear cycling
tights under the neoprene - these are LG polypro (LG = Louis Garneau
brand), sort of like wool tights with a modern fabric. You end up
looking like a cyclist wandering around after removing the FJ.

I've seen fabric tubes sold at various places for parking lot clothes
changes. Climbers like them - I think that was the dept that sold
them at MEC. I've seen similar for WW paddlers complete with a foot
mat that closes up as a wet-gear bag.

I use my poly/mylar emergency tarp (the heavy kind) as a curtain;
convenient as it's one of the things that's in my "always carry"
kayak kit.

I wear nothing...or a pair of board shorts.*

A buddy swears by his Utilikilt for an apres paddling change of
clothes.

*Cheap board shorts purchased at WalMart. WalMart also has great
polyester athletic apparel that is quite similar to more expensive
'rashguard' apparel.

I go for the "open both doors on one side of the car and change quickly in
between" mode. I do wear polypro boxer briefs under the wetsuit. Campmor
carries them. Winter paddling involves too much shrinkage to be displaying
your wares.......

I pretty much grew up in wet suits. I have worn nothing, Speedo type suits
and board shorts - not all at the same time :-) It pretty much depends on the
situation and the suit. Surfers generally go commando and do the street dance
getting in and out of the suit. They wear thinner one piece suits that can be
quickly changed into and out of under a towel. When you get to the thicker
diving type suits they will often be so constricting as to require a Houdini
straight jacket type contortionist struggle that a towel around the waist will
simply not conceal.
Board shorts can be a pain when the legs roll up and bunch when you are
pulling on the suit. With a bit of effort you can get your hand under the wet
suit and straighten things back out so that everything is once again hunky dory.
The Lycra suits are easier, but not everyone is comfortable parading around
in skin tight shorts. Wearing nothing at all underneath your new wetsuit is the
simplest by far but the most difficult to get into and out of in public with
some discretion.
So the bottom line here is that it's pretty much up to you.

Any wet suit I have ever had (neoprene or watersports polartec-type
material) were bought because their main zipper was laid out in a way that
it could be use as a relief zipper or had two zipper pulls, one of which
comes from the bottom near the crotch area. So my choice has always been to
wear non-snug nylon running shorts with two things in mind (not getting my
privates caught in the zipper when putting on the suit; ability to relieve
myself--this is where the loose fit of the shorts doesn't get in the way the
way tight elastic compression shorts might). Running shorts have a built in
jock support of sorts which is nice to have. They also prevent chafing in
the groin area. And they provide a modicum of etiquette when getting in and
out of the wet suit in public.

I would guess that this falls between this thread and the paddling surprises
thread:

I used to scuba dive quite a bit and my wife, then my girlfriend, would tour
on her bicycle to the dive sites. One day I had finished my dive with a
friend and we were standing around cleaning up while my wife biked up. I
had stripped off my wet suit and was standing in a Speedo bathing suit (men
should never wear loose baggy shorts in diving wet suit if they ever wish to
have children). My wife pedaled up just as a car filled with teenage girls
drove by and whistled at me. Over ten years later, my wife still hasn't let
me forget it.
