I guess I won't hold that against him ... I have several friends who are
attorneys ... and Mariner users.

Truly gutzy (or maybe nutzy) paddling non-lawyer Timo Noko didn't
just talk about doing it. No political agenda or prior
announcement. Just went out and did it (maybe that's why there
weren't any newspaper articles promoting his journey beforehand?).
Interesting character. Truly interesting story and fun read at:

http://www.kolumbus.fi/timo.noko/mexico/eng.html

Lots of folks have talked about/attempted epic journeys. Some
have actually completed them. Some journey with no designated
end.

>From de la Fuente - "I wanted to make a difference, and this
just came to me," he says with a shrug.

Well, ok. Whatever floats your boat.

Yes, it's interesting to read. I'd like to read his Finnish language Baja
trip reports - 1993 and 1994. English version ends on 1993. Unfortunately,
can't figure out how to use his translator program and don't see any on-line
Finnish-English translators.

Thanks for the links, Michael. :-)

More who have actually made the long journey:

John Dowd, founding editor of Sea Kayaker could tell
de le Fuente a lot about his "upcoming" trip and then some
http://www.seakayakermag.com/2004/June04/dowd1.htm

Paul Caffyn is another long-distance paddler (that's probably an
understatement):
http://www.sissonkayaks.co.nz/caffyn.htm (probably better links
out there)

Derek Hutchinson - crossing of the North Sea and other expeditions
http://www.useakayak.org/derek_hutchinson.html

Paddlewisers Arthur Hebert and Larry Koenig - circumnavigation
of Gulf of Mexico... the entire shoreline (in process, almost
completed)
http://www.lacostadelgolfo.com/

Ed Gillet - paddle from California to Hawaii
http://mwatton.customer.netspace.net.au/pacific.html

... to mention a few :-)

hmmmm... maybe there could be section on the PaddleWise website
for these kayakers? Kirk? I'll be happy to set it up....

cheers,

Jackie

One of his funniest lines I find in his journal when describing
a difficult period was this:

"At that particular point I was quite willing to give up. But realized
that I had no one to give up to, because nearest road was 50
kilometers away inland."

Good photos, too.

Yes, optimistic essay. But these guys have better photos:
http://www.caske2000.org/caske/photos/index.htm . They shot them 7 years
later, though, using both SLR and some digital cameras. Their journals are
at the bottom of the page. The trip was done differently from T. Noko's
(with sponsors and commercial gear), but interesting because Baja was their
first folding kayak journey. Writing isn't bad too.

Steph Dutton, expedition paddler who paddled from Victoria BC

Steph Dutton is also an amputee who hasn't let that get in the

Better URL for Heidi and Steph: http://www.sanctuarycruises.com/index1.html

They lived together for a time in Astoria ... back when Steph was a rep for
Eddyline ... in a tiny house that included a parrot which owned Steph's
shoulder. Quite a pair, and a lot of stories. Heidi was one of the first
(maybe the first) female towboat crew members, back in the late '80's, when
towboating was a strictly all-male profession. More stories.

I met Steph here at an annual harbour event, the 1993 Victoria Symphony

He was in his kayak to watch the symphony and so was I.

I wondered where his paddle took him.

Here's another epic journey from the UK, Sean Morley is currently paddling
4200 miles around Britain and Ireland and all inhabited outliers:

http://www.expeditionkayak.com/

I was out paddling at StKilda this summer, and met Sean after his 11 hour
crossing from North Uist. St Kilda is a world heritage site 48 miles west of
Hebridean chain of islands in the North Atlantic. Some of my photos from my
trip at http://www.abdn.ac.uk/~ltu006/images/stkildaslides/, and stkilda
info _at_ http://www.kilda.org.uk/. Sean's mileage is seriously impressive,
helped by his kirton c-trek boat, exclusive use of wing paddles, and sea
kayak and marathon racing background.

Cheers

Colin

I don't know what it is like to paddle south of Matzatlan but until there,
at least, his trip shouldn't be much of a problem. Water could be his
biggest problem especially if the winter winds tie him down for too many
days at a time. I think he should at least double if not triple his water
capacity and take a backpacker size pressure cooker for a cooking pot that
he can convert to a still with some copper tubing if needed (or take a small
reverse osmosis desalinator or tea kettle that can double as a still). I
know several folks who have done the entire Baja shore of the Sea of Cortez,
some were quite novice when they started the trip. I've paddled several
parts of it during six vacations there. Baja is a fascinating place. He is
going the right direction to take advantage of the prevailing winds. It
looks like he is willing to take the ferry or use other transportation when
it is convienent or safer and he is skirting the hurricane season and the
hottest weather. I know Roger, so it seems he has been getting very good
training as well. The kayak in the picture looks to be one by Necky. Most
well publicized trips don't use Mariners, partly because we don't give them
away free like many manufacturers will (for the publicity). I wish him the
best of luck.

This isn't easy. Water is not just heavy, but bulky as well, because it is
consumed in large volumes daily. 10 liter MSR bag goes in 2.5-3 days in hot
weather. How much water can one store in such a boat - 12 gallons? This is
for 12-14 days only. Some sections of his route are complete desert for a
hundred of miles or so. Desalinator is a must for such journeys, because,
you are right, storms may tie him down for days at a time.

>and take a backpacker size pressure cooker for a cooking pot that

Was there anybody successful with a still? It needs a lot of fuel.
Driftwood is usually available there, but I don't know how practical will it
be. Reverse osmosis desalinator is a marvellous thing, but larger PUR-35
(without a motor), not small PUR-06. It will take 4 hours of daily pumping
PUR-06, and only 1 hour of pumping PUR-35. They are incredibly expensive,
though.

I didn't read the whole article
http://www.sacbee.com/content/lifestyle/story/10371564p-11291327c.html when
commented earlier - sorry. Therefore I could not imagine anybody paddling
almost the full length of Baja, from the USA border to La Paz (then taking
ferry to Mazatlan), carrying only 3-days supply of water (14 liters). It
takes 10-12 paddling days from Bahia de Los Angeles to St.Rosalia (=40-50
liters of water), no water there (and contrary to what the author says,
there are no fishing camps in this area, or very few, because this is a
natural reserve). There is also 2-3 days paddle around Concepcion penincila
to San Nicolas, with plenty of chances to get stuck for a week, due to
winter storm.

Hopefully the author got it backwards, and it was 41 liters, not 14 :-).
This would make sense, speaking of both safety (10 days supply), and
existing storage - 4*10-liter MSR bags and 1-liter deck flask or hydration
system.

So, Matt was right - amount of water should be tripled, up to approximately
40 liters (10 gallons). Even this could not be enough, and going there
without a desalinator wouldn't be sensible. What if he'll lose or damage
some cargo (including water bags) for any reason, or coyotes will gnaw MSR
bags through? Or if he'll want to stop for 2-3 days anywhere along the
route, be it for a particularly nice cove, or boat/gear repairs, or fatique
(or again, storm).
