Discussions of dried food reminded me of an item that I've been unable to
find - sour cream mix. I've seen this referenced in several trailfood
books - recipes calling for "1 sour cream mix packet". I've never found a
just-add-water sour cream mix (or any kind of mix for that matter). Has
anyone else? If so, please share brand names / sources. I found a place
that sells 5 gallon pails - but that seemed to be a bit extreme!!

Or, do people dry their own? Not sure if that would be possible.

To me, sour cream could be a real shot to otherwise blah one-pot meals.

Thanks,
K

I have a old old note from my local club list that people were finding
Knorr Swiss brand sour cream. They make dry-envelope soups, and the sour
cream mix is usually there in any supermarket that sells Knorr brand stuff.
Advice is to mix it a little stiffer than sugggested, using powdered milk.

Thanks for the responses regarding powdered sour cream - here is a summary:

Knorr Brand suggested, contacted company and they no longer produce this
product

King Arthur Flour website suggested - contacted them and they do not have it.

Two website sources:

$22 for a 10 pound can of sour cream powder:
http://beprepared.com/product.asp?pn=FS%20D055

$16 for a 3 pound can of sour cream powder:
http://store.honeyvillegrain.com/browseproducts/Sour-Cream-Powder-CAN.html

So...it appears at this point that if you have some friends that want to
split up a big container that would be an option, 10 lbs would go a long
way!! I assume the stuff would keep for a long, long time in powder form.

Thanks again to everyone who replied.

Sorry for coming late to the discussion, but given that yogurt can be
dried to a leather and that I use plain yogurt as a direct substitute
for sour cream in cooking, my simple reasoning suggests that drying
sour cream may be feasable. Perhaps a test is in order - bring the
Imodium just in case :-)

You can make a surprisingly good faux sour cream if you experiment a bit
using a heap of milk powder, a small pinch of salt and a squeeze of
lemon juice. Not as good as the real thing but passable on nachos etc. A
rumbling stomach fires the imagination and makes things taste better I
find. At home I sour plain low-fat yoghurt with a shot of lemon juice
as a substitute for sour cream. r
