Anyone listen to music while paddling? I'm thinking of getting an MP3 flash
memory player for work, hikes, and paddling. Something waterproof would be
appropriate for the latter. 40 knot winds, wild tides, and your tunes
cranked kinda sounds cool to me.
Here's a link to a possible purchase, complete with waterproof housing. Any
thoughts/experiences?

What a coincidence, I just purchased an iPod Shuffle two weeks ago just for
that purpose. For the most part and I think most would agree, I prefer to
paddle with all my senses available to me. Often, whether it's a change in
current, an alligator splashing into river or a powerboat the first warning
I get is from my ears. This only becomes that much more important when
paddling in the dark. I am positive I am not telling you anything you don't
already know. Having said that occasionally some music can be very
motivational. Being a former professional dancer (the ballet kind not the
Chippendale kind) I have always been a person that was moved by music.
I decided on the Shuffle because of the price, the size and the simplicity
of use. I plan on using it with a small dry bag. I looked at the iriver
but, decided since I can't usually get a FM signal where I paddle that I did
not need that feature. I was not aware they made a water-proof version and
that might have influenced my decision.
So far I am happy with the Shuffle and believe it is the closest you can
come to having music piped directly into your brain via an implant. I will
let you know how it fairs on the water.

Yes. I've done it a few times on some lakes where I wasn't worried
about getting run over by a boat or tipping over. If you're going out
more for exercise, or you're getting tired, it is a great morale booster.

There appears to be a number of waterproof cases and things for an iPod
and other popular MP3 players if you already own one. You also need
waterproof headphones, or just use a pair of cheap headphones under a hat.

It might be fun to mount some waterproof speakers under the deck, and
hook up a car stereo to a bilge pump battery. You could then blast
"Ride of the Valkyries" as you were making the rounds, but that'd
probably be against Leave No Trace ethics. But, I wonder how good of a
sounding board a kayak would make?

I ran across this a few years ago; your idea carried to the extreme:
     http://www.royak.com/boat-note.shtml

"...a pair of top quality matched water-resistant 6" X 9"...speakers
are seated in acoustically sound speaker enclosures designed by Royak
engineers specifically for the purpose of pushing brilliant
high-volume / undistorted sound, both above and across the surface of
the water. The speakers are separated with a fully insulated acoustic
divider which is integrated into the hull (see diagram below). This
boat creates a unique sound quality through the use of this acoustic
separation and through the submergence of the speaker enclosures
under the water's surface. It's really an amazing sound!"

They should be banned, with heavy penalties :-)... Alas, no driver's license
is required for powerboat, nothing to suspend...

Maybe where you live, but in some jurisdictions, they are tying
licenses to boat usage. In Ontario, legislation is in process that
will put a "boating under the influence" on your driving record and
you can lose your driver's license accordingly.

As far as a boom-box boat goes, I pity the poor sea critters. Bad
enough their environment is made excessively noisy by humans, but to
let these louts do to the water what they already do to cities is a
crime.

Yeah, I looked up the iPod accessories and there are a couple of good
quality waterproof cases. I do want a player with a lot of low bass, which
limits my options, though proper bit-rate can help with better dynamics.

I obviously would be careful to not play tunes loudly in and around boat
traffic. Where I paddle, Race Rocks, in the wind, there ain't any marine
traffic out there; though I did see a Zodiac literally flying over the waves
a wjile back. I think they were doing some training or testing, and/or some
rich American paid extra for a wild whale-watching escapade. One would be
able to hear the prop even with Wagner full on in the headphones, though in
some of the gales out there, you can't hear anything past the shrieking,
anyway.

However, no more accessories are allowed on my boat, lest I push Canadian
marine authorities to pass an kayak anti-paraphernalia law. Who wants a law
named after them?

Perhaps I'll get around to that fancy, custom wood kayak one day soon, less
accessorized than my current ride, with room for a sound system. How about a
little Curly Maple for good sound board acoustics?

Anyway, Race Rocks has been "rocking" non-stop the last few weeks with this
Aleutian low beating the jet stream southward. Rock on man!!!!!!!!!!!
