Have just bought one, secondhand, yet unused. This thing is so small after my
old Icom M1V - every time I hold it I can't help feeling that the battery or
something else is missing :-)

All is allright, only one function I can't make work - "LAND" channels group.
There wasn't any "land" on Icom M1V, only regular US, International and
Canadian mode, so I don't feel like missing something. Just curious. Manual
says that M88 is supposed to have Land - "Mobile channels for commercial use,
license may be required", but there is no land in this M88 - can only switch
it between U, I, and C.
My wild guess - some licensing changes, resulting in adding or removing this
Land option in units of certain vintage?

The "land" channels in the M88 are programmable in the 146 to 174 Mhz range.
There are 22 available. This is the 2-meter amateur radio band in the USA so
those who are ham radio operators can have one handheld to cover both the
ham frequencies and the marine band. The rest are business or commercial
frequencies (channels) that require specific licensing. I don't know if
they've disabled this function or not. It was probably an attempt to combine
several radios into one. You might google for more info.

My M88 manual details the procedure on page 16. Basically, you have to go
to the dealer to get the settings and LMR frequency programming details, so
that they can ascertain that you have the correct license. All this is for
use in the US. Could be the requirements for use of those frequencies in
Canada are different.

Thanks everybody. I probably don't need these LMR frequences, so let it be.
Not a bad radio, even without those LMR. My Icom M1V here in Vancouver
apartment could only pick 3 Canadian weather channels, this one has USCG
channel 4 sometimes clearer than our CCG :-), though urban interference
noises seem to be louder too. More sensitive circuit, probably.
And only now I've noticed that Icom M72 is much more powerful Tx than other
handheld VHF - 6 watts. Longer casing than M88 (that's why I didn't
bother); TAD thinner, though.
