My Garmin 12XL accessory list has the PC kit listed for $92. The docs have no description of the kit nor how to use it. For $92 I assume it's more than just a connector. Sounds like a chip to upload/download stuff into the GPS. Hopefully it comes with instructions. I currently have DeLorme's Street Atlas that supports waypoints and the Garmin 12XL. I was at a sailboat show in Hartford, CT over the weekend and ordered MapTech's Newfoundland East Coast CD. This also will be able to up load to the 12XL. I know some members have used the PC kits. Any problems, concerns or issues to be aware of? The Kit is just the cable and software for managing uploads. I assume when you say the Canadian CD will upload, you mean waypoints only, no graphics. The III+ will actually load graphics. cya -----Original Message----- From: owner-paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net [mailto:owner-paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net] On Behalf Of Sisler, Clyde Sent: Monday, March 22, 1999 10:20 AM To: 'Paddlewise' Subject: [Paddlewise] Garmin PC kit My Garmin 12XL accessory list has the PC kit listed for $92. The Kit is just the cable and software for managing uploads. I assume when --------- I thought the GPS was passive and the package with the waypoints did the uploading/downloading? What does the Garmin software do, upload/download text files or something? If so, do I really need it? Just the cable is only half as much. West Marine has a picture of the kit and shows a 1.44 diskette which obviously goes into the PC. you say the Canadian CD will upload, you mean waypoints only, no graphics. The III+ will actually load graphics. --------- I don't have the package yet so I don't know what it can do yet. I only have a 12XL so waypoints are all I would get. *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.gasp-seakayak.net/paddlewise/ ***************************************************************************

It contains a data cable (which is worth about 15 bucks) and some very simple software. You can get better software for free. A source for an inexpensive ($15) data cable is Wolfe's: http://www.gpscables.com/catalog.html#cables For information on available software, visit the "Third-Party GPS Intermediate Software" section on Joe Mehaffey and Jack Yeazel's GPS Information Website at: http://www.joe.mehaffey.com/ This is an outstanding site for information about GPS hardware and software. I still had to solder in the DB9 connector, too. *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.gasp-seakayak.net/paddlewise/ ***************************************************************************
Hi Clyde, > My Garmin 12XL accessory list has the PC kit listed for $92. The > docs have no description of the kit nor how to use it. Dump the PC package and just get a data cable. Like Dan has already mentioned, the free software is better than the stuff you can buy from Garmin. Quickly becoming my favorite in the free waypoint management software department is a program called G7TOWin. This started life as a DOS based waypoint manager (G7TO), moved up to a windows console program (G7TOW) and is now a full windows GUI (G7TOWin). You can get this program from: http://www.proaxis.com/~crh/gps/g7to/g7to.htm Despite it being beta software the last few versions have been pretty stable. > > I currently have DeLorme's Street Atlas that supports waypoints and the > Garmin 12XL. The latest GPS driver for SA 6.0 isn't too bad, but I like to use G7TOWin because it will plot your route across water, something SA thinks is a bad thing. http://www.tidalwave.net/~woodardr/waterplot.jpg Shows a GPS water route overlaid onto a SA map by G7TOWin (light blue lines), and http://www.tidalwave.net/~woodardr/Trip010.jpg Shows an example of a GPS track plot overlaid onto a SA map after download from G7TOWin (Black lines). Things can't be -that- open. I'll review the packages in detail and come back in a week or two with any additional questions. Dan & Robert both posted interesting urls so I intend to archive the thread for future reference in my Paddlewise section. *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.gasp-seakayak.net/paddlewise/ ***************************************************************************

I can't say about Street Atlas. Besides SA 3, 4, 5, and 6 format, G7TOWin will also output: Text Files Ozi waypoint, route, plot, and event files CSV (comma separated) format Navigate.exe route files Fugawi waypoint and track files Garmin almanac files Screen shots of some Garmin and LEI GPS units The latest G7TOWin will also send directly into SA if it is already running. <Disclaimer> This sounds like a commercial but I'm not associated with Ron Henderson or G7TO in any way other than I'm real happy with his program. And it's free, so who can complain? *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.gasp-seakayak.net/paddlewise/ ***************************************************************************
There was a fellow molding a Garmin connector for $5. I made up a cable and have used it for years. This is the connector I purchased a few years ago. I bought a ready made one from one of the listed dealers, (one in Wisconsin, I think) about two years ago. Works great for me, also. I'm sure the kit is a better deal, but didn't want the hassle of putting it together at the time.
