Has anyone been kayaking on Mono Lake? I am going to Yosemite and I just got
the bright idea of bringing the baidarkas and visiting Mono Lake also. I
have never been and I am thinking about taking my 10 year old daughter to
check it out. We are leaving today, any info. would be most greatly
appreciated.

I am also concerned about leaving them unattended while hiking for hours
while hiking since they are hand made and unreplaceable. Any comments?

- Many thanks in advance!!

I did read several articles about kayaking on Mono Lake.
1. Don't leave kayaks unattended, they may be gone when you return.
2. Paddle in the morning since fierce winds seem to spring up in the
afternoon, common in mountains and deserts.
3. There is an off-limits time in early summer to avoid disturbing breeding
waterfowl, I forget when it is. Do a Yahoo search on Mono Lake.
4. The black flies might seem a problem, but they don't bite and are
harmless. Don't kill them, birds use them for food.
5. Some of the mineral deposits can scratch/cut a boat.
6. Remember that 80% of the oxygen is in the first 3000 ft of altitude.
Mono is above that.
Have fun.

I've been up there once and kayaked around the lake. It's very pretty
with primitive camping areas nearby in the tall pines. A word of
warning from the local ranger, if you are paddling out on the lake,
stay close to shore unless highly experienced as winds can suddenly
kick up. They can be quite fierce. Also, the concentration of salt
in the water is quite high. You'll have a lot of cleaning to do when
you get home 8-}

Leaving them unattended where? I'd check with the ranger station at
the entry to the park for feedback on any problems such as that.

Have a great trip.

Jackie

There are signs indicating not to get in the water unless you are prepared
to spend the night on the downwind shore.

Put in at dawn and plan on being out before noon. Some wicked winds start
up in the afternoon and it can get dangerously choppy. You can put in
boats at Navy Pier (beach?) on the south side of the lake. This is about a
quarter mile or so from some tufa. Read the sign before you go in as
certain times of year the islands are off limits do to nesting birds.
Morning is a beautiful time, the lake is like glass and the water is clear
a long ways down.

On your way through Yosemite, you might also enjoy putting in at any of a
number of the lakes. They're small but nice to putter around in.

Have fun,
deb

Funny reading these posts - I had my 6th birthday party at Mono Lake, got
a neat stuffed animal, and then went water skiing! What I remember the
most was the brine shrimp, millions of them everywhere. Is that just my
imagination? Maybe I'm getting senile (my 43rd bday is next week!)
