What would be the advantages or disadvantages of using neoprene in lieu of
mini cell foam for knee/ thigh padding?

I liked the (closed cell) neoprene a bit better for shaping. It's
higher density works really well on stationary disk/belt sanders where I
finish a loosely cut blank.

Neoprene is softer. I would guess it would be a lot more comfortable, but
would have to be thick enough to give a little. Neoprene (around these
parts) is hard to get in thicker sizes. It's also expensive. I got a big
piece of mini-cell from a retailer for free, so there's no comparison.

If you use neoprene covered on one side with nylon, it'd probably last
longer, but would be more slippery.

Mouse pads look like a cheap source of neoprene, but most are just foam
rubber (open cell) and are falsely advertised as neoprene. I almost swiped
a really thick neoprene mouse pad from a client company of mine, but
I couldn't bring myself to do it. I kept imagining two of them as thigh hook
pads...

I picked up some latex foam samples made by Rubbatex (VA) at a dive show a
few years ago and in my opinoion they are the BEST! It's the same foam used
in better PFDs and is available in various densities. It is easy to get a
good grip on the boat and the foam is much more comfortable then minicell. I
have glued the 3M self adhesive deck stuff on the pads and it works
extremely well.

I've also used it, sandwiched with minicell and wet suit neoprene for a
seat.

  Hi Bob,

Any leads on where we can find this stuff - I managed to find a
distributor, CGR & Valley Products, but am curious as to whether you know if
it is available through any retail channels. I've made a phone inquiry to
CGR & Valley, and am awaiting information on minimum order quantity, etc.
He told me that they could probably work with a small order, but wasn't "the
guy" to really answer that question.

I'd call Rubatex. They are located just outside Roanoke, VA and ask where to
purchase a small quantity of their latex foam. They do sell direct to the
public. It's great stuff, about an inch thick but tough to cut and it won't
carve like minicell. It doesn't take a set. As I said, it's the same stuff
in your PFD.
