I just received my Nexus in Bruton packaging which fits nicely onto the
recess of my Romany. I am rather perplexed that screws are supplied
assuming that most people will mount them in fiberglass. I would assume
that this + silicone caulk would be sufficient, but not the optimum way.
Anybody have any thoughts? My first inclination is drilling out for
#8-32 nut, bolt and washer with either a neoprene or silicone gasket.

(just to save some typing, non ferrous metal of course)

This sounds like a plan Bob. Did you use the adhesive as is on the
velcro or did you supplement it?

I have mine attached using 3M Marine Velcro (The 3M white plastic stuff)
mounted in the corners of the black plastic mounting plate and on the
recess. I use a small piece of minicell at the bottom of the recess to keep
the compass from rattling. I can also move the compass from boat to boat and
take it off the boat for storage. I am thinking of gluing some gasket
material around the mounting plate and foregoing the minicell.

I've used this system for 3 years and haven't lost the compass yet.

I supplemented the adhesive on the deck but never had to on the mounting
plate.

I had the same thought, Gabriel, but I succumbed to the lazy-bug and used
the screws with lots of silicone caulk. After the compass was in place, I
used a nipper and a file to eliminate any sharp points inside the hatch,
then slathered on another coat of the silicone. It's been close to three
years now, and so far so good.

That was my feeling as well Sid, but Bob Volin is probably far better
adjusted and less obsessive than we are.

I think that I am going to try Bob Dentons method of velcro which is
very appealing (On my wife's kayak first...)

Hey Bob, this is a good idea- seems to work fine though I have to pry it
off with a screwdriver. I can now transfer it between two boats.

Does this mean if I loose it I have lost 2 compasses?

If you lost a mounting plate through total stupidity Bob, I will
certainly explode mine or something...

I did lose the mounting plate once through total stupidity and I did have
quite a bit of trouble with Brunton trying to get a spare so be careful.
They were great, and replaced the whole compass. I assume they now have the
spare parts from Sweden..
