Opinions solicited please..reply to the list or back channel as appropriate:

1.. If you had a choice between a natural finish for a wood stitch & glue
(Pygmy's Coho) or a painted finish (racing green on white hull, natural wood
trim) which would you chose?

2.. If you had a skin on frame kayak would you favorably consider painting
the deck?

Many thanks...sam d.

Is it true that if you are painting the S&G boat that you need to be more
careful about runs or drips in the finish - as opposed to leaving the grain
show thru - that the paint tends to highlight blemishes more?

Not suggesting that you want to try for lots of drips and runs! BUT...I
talked to one person who built a S & G boat that intentionally didn't fuss
with the perfect finish - with a perfect finish he felt he would always be
pampering the boat and worrying about every scratch....this way, he starts
out knowing that there are blems so he enjoys his new boat more.

Nice wood and nice craftsmanship, natural. Ugly wood or what was I doing
construction - paint.

Why limit yourself to just the deck? I've seen some very cool looking
skin/frame boats with eyes, mouths etc. Put the decorative paint/dye
on before putting on the sealant. I know I've got pictures of a couple
of cool painted boats around here somewhere... There are some pictures
of painted hulls on the spirit line site http://www.skinboats.com/

I'd agree here - I think that some folks go too far in showing wood.
If there are several seam lines between pieces and the grain is
wide and/or doesn't match, a nice paint job would be better. Many
S&G kayaks look kinda cheap au naturel. Some Betsy Bays look good
with just a bit of wood exposed and clean paint on the hull.

OTOH, on a stripper with really well done contrasting strips
(yer basic work o'art), it would be a shame to paint it over.

I've seen two interesting wooden boats -
on one the builder tie-dyed cloth and glassed it onto the hull
on another they painted or dyed a whole series of Native American symbols
(that I believe told a story) on the cloth before glassing it onto the boat

As aesthetics goes - the beauty is in the eye of the beholder...personally,
a tie-dye boat isn't in my future!
