G'Day

Andrew McAuley has set off agin to try and cross the Tasman. My mates in
Tassie report that he left Fortescue Bay at 3:30pm yesterday to paddle to
NZ. Theres a good weather forecast for the next week with a slight offshore
breeze forecast.

His website http://www.andrewmcauley.com/index.html has the latest report.

Other relevant websites are http://tinyurl.com/y3kjgp which predicts the
weather and sea state across the Tasman for the next week and
http://tinyurl.com/ym2ctm which gives the currents and temperatures along
the way.

A second group, paddling a double with a cabin built onto the stern, will be
making an attempt in late January. Their website is
http://www.crossingtheditch.com.au/ .

This is the toughest crossing imaginable and if Andrew and/or the Knox boys
succeed it will be a major one for the records.

Here's wishing them all good fortune.

All the best, PeterO
(And thanks Dave for telling me about tinyurl its a beauty!!!)

All of my paddling in this brave new year has been limited to the surf
kayak. Well, I did help a couple friends discover their inner roller at the pool,
but other than that, it has been the surf that has occupied me.

New Year's resolutions. No kayaking in the snow and cold and spend
more time with the family.

They won't be able to hold out for long.

I've been paddling too much to write much of anything. A week in the Keys
just before Christmas, paddling everywhere from Pennekamp to the backyard
mangrove tunnels in Key West, a few nights at Camp Lulu Key in the 10,000
islands, for New Year's, then 2 nights last weekend at Whitehorse Key, also
in the 10,000 islands. No time for anything else. Oh, well... there's
nothing else for it... I'm going paddling again. Screw work. Happy New
Year!

So Canada's tropics are snowbound. That's funny!!

Here in the eastern Great Lakes region, I should be paddling - it's spring
weather now; has been for a while. Folks are gardening and worried that the
flowers will start coming out soon. Hey, I can send you a useful winter tool -
it's called a shovel! :-)

Months ago, I was considering entering the Keskinada cross-country ski race.
However, even if it snowed tomorrow, I would only have a few weeks to get into
ski shape (swimming and such keeps me in general shape, but...).

I looked at Lake Ontario earlier today (two blocks away) and it was pretty calm
for a winter day. I really should be paddling...

Hmmm, how often does it snow in Victoria? Here on the south shore lake
Superior the bays are still unusally ice free for this time of year
although ice balls are forming. I would go paddling but the skiing is more
fun now. Here's a video of lake conditions on Wed near Ontanogon MI.

Only the surfers were crazy enough to go out.

Four of us went out last saturday - 72 degree air temp and 44 degree
water. I had to drag my hands in the water to cool down.

3 surf skis and an outrigger canoe. We saw 6 other kayaks - all
blissfully unprepared for a swim. We were the only ones wearing
neoprene. Early January on the coast of massachusetts and people are
100+ meters from shore in shorts and t-shirts with a gusty wind...

Tomorrow I'm headed out to visit the warren light craft facility -
http://www.warrenlightcraft.com/ Then we have the awards ceremony for
our local surfski point series - we have races every tuesday night, when
the days are long. It's nice to get out and play after work. If it's
not snowing we'll probably paddle tomorrow after the awards ;-)
