I attended a very good class recently with Howard Rice. He confessed to
us he owned (present tense) 36 boats. That made me think about my own
sins. I have owned the following small boats in the following order:

Perception Kiowee II (pair of them), VCP Pintail & Avocet, two plastic
whitewater kayaks, Pygmy Tern 14, Guillemot Night Heron, Shearwater
Baidarka single and double, Pyranha Surf Jet SOT, 1963 Old Town OTCA
canoe, Guillemot Matunuck, Barto Melonseed, Yakaboo II sailing canoe. I
publicly confess this because I am kind of confused at how the list grew
so quickly.

I have half a dozen sets of plans sitting next to my desk. Its not like
I have a problem. I still have some room left. Really.

Help me Obi Wan,

Jim et al

Luckily, the social effects of kayak over-consumption are relatively benign.
As long as you can house most of them on your own premises...

I'm slightly concerned that I suspect that I paddled more when I only had
the one - but it's too long ago to remember clearly.

There definitely needs to be some periodic purging of boats.....

If you haven't used it in a year it probably deserves a better home.

That said my 1930 klepper frame needs to find a new home....

My dyson 5.7 baidarka is probably a basket case - new home not likely...
Hmmm the aluminum frame could make for an interesting yard sculpture....

I think the other 14 were all used in the 12 months. So it's not pure
hoarding ;-)

Luckily being married generally means you have a built in sanity
checker. I was told a few years ago that if I wanted another boat I had
to get rid of a boat. This rule has been obeyed for the most part.

Out of the list given earlier I still have the Tern 14, single and
double baidarkas, Matunuck, Melonseed and sailing canoe. I forgot to
mention a Mega Bullitt surf kayak and a pair of Island waveskis I keep
in the shed. All are used with the double being used once a year in a
race off Tybee Island. The double would be next on the auction block if
I were pushed.

One problem with selling wooden boats in the deep South of the USA is
that no one seems to want them. This forces you to almost give them away
for a few hundred dollars which is heartbreaking. I placed my Night
Heron for sale in a very popular hardcore kayak shop where it sat for
almost a year. The price was insanely low. A man from NY bought it and
paddled it for a year. He then sold it in NY for almost three timers
what he paid for it. I dont begrudge him that at all. As Kirk
mentioned I was glad such a well designed boat ended up back in the
kayaking mainstream where it would be used and appreciated. I benefited
from the sale by flipping the money into a new build.

Howard Rice lives in three different countries; USA, Micronesia and
Japan. I think we can somehow justify his collection of 36 boats by
saying he really only has 12/country. Maybe I need to obtain dual
citizenship and do the same.

I am sure that until Harvey Golden says he has a problem the rest of us
are safe from intervention.

Even here in SoCal, wood boats sell for dirt cheap. I've got an Arctic
Tern kit in my garage that I bought for $150, but I think why build it
when I can probably find one all built for $6-8 hundred. Had I more
discretionary income, I'd be taking in more boats from craigslist to
play with and send on to better homes. So many different boats out there
and how are you ever going to try them all! Currently I have 7 boats in
my garage--only non-kayakers are impressed!

I am married and don't have that sanity checker. Fortunately (for me,
anyway, not for our fiscal soundeness) my spouse's hobby is riding a
horse. And being owned by a horse. So, compared to what she spends on
the horse (board, routine medical stuff, shoes, hunt dues, trail
license) I could buy a new kayak, paddle, lifejacket, and spray skirt
every year and still not spend more than she does.

Right now I'm down to nine kayaks and pretty happy with the collection
as it is. So I'll spend the $ on something nice like another trip to
Greenland.

Like the old joke "Do you suffedr from insanity?" "No, I rather enjoy
it."

I know I'm okay... I sold a whitewater kayak last year. It's been 5 years
since I did any whitewater work... I have two more I will sell soon. I am
pretty sure.

I peaked at 9 kayaks, got down to 4, and am now back up to 7 of my own.
Counting my daughters' boats, we're up to 10.
16 total in a 14+ year paddling career.
