Hello folks,

Well I've purchased my first GPS unit and I'm learning how to properly use
it. I'm curious, where on a kayak do folks place their GPS units? For the
sake of a "newbie" do you mind sharing your experiences with GPS? Will it
work if it's stowed under the skirt? Do you keep it in a pelican water proof
box (with clear lid)? Keep it in a clear plastic protection? Keep it stowed
in PFD? etc....

Thanks in advance for sharing your expertise and knowledge...

Wade

Wade,
For flatwater paddling, I keep Garmin 12XL in a clear waterproof GPS bag either
around my neck on a lanyard or in my front shirt pocket (still secured with a
lanyard). I have the unit in the bag upside down so it's right side-up when I
read it (which I do frequently for bearings as well as distance, speed, and
estimated time of arrival).

Around the neck wear would not be a good idea for whitewater, however.

I use mine in a clear soft voyageur case with a roll top. I can push the
buttons through the case and I clip the case onto the foredeck bungie cords.
I like to watch speed and odometer readings when I am kayaking. Don't put it
under the skirt you will want to look at the GPS.

I forgot to add a URL to a picture of mine in action (It's the same type as
Mary uses):

I don't use the Voyageur model, but the Aquapac. I think that the Voyageur
is actually a better design. The roll top is less fiddly than the plastic
clamp on the Aquapac, and the padding on the bottom is better. Sealline
(Cascade Design) makes one as well, but of the three I prefer the Voyageur.
There are several hard shell cases out, but they are probably overkill
for a GPS. There are clear-top Peli boxes as well as those from
Otter (?) and a few others. I'd reserve the hard shell for PDAs, cell
phones and other, more fragile electronic widgets. The biggest drawback
with the hard shell cases is that they are "look but don't touch".

When it's not on my deck, I stick the GPS in the knee tube under the deck
and it doesn't seriously affect the reception if I leave it on. The
fiberglass doesn't attenuate the signal much.

Can you let us know where you found a clear plastic, waterproof GPS bag
    with a cord?

I myself have used my Garmin 12XL and more recently my eTrex Vista in a
Voyageur bag. It has a plastic hook that clips to one of the D-rings on my
  Klepper's spraydeck.

The nice thing about the Voyageur bag is that it is flexible enough for
you to manipulate the controls, very important!
Also it's on the front deck where the unit can "see" the satellites and
maintain contact. I've had my unit shut down when it has lost the
signals after being put in a pocket.

I'd think IN the boat somehow would be the only way to carry something in WW.
I can't think of too many uses for a GPS in WW, anyway.

Around ones neck for much of anything in a kayak doesn't sound like a good
idea. I even hedge my bets with my nose plug by passing it through the D ring
in my pocket so it can't tighten deadly tight on my neck.
