Hi Y'all!
I have an Arctic Hawk that I am planning on putting a retractable skeg in,
and also a day hatch and possibly a foot pump. I am looking for suppliers to
buy these items from, and any photos, ideas and advice would also be
welcome!

Just curious: any particular reason for the skeg?

CLC sells skeg plans and kits that could be easily adapted to your boat.
I actually haven't built one yet, but IMO the design looks more reliable
than any I have seen on commercial boats.

GRO carries day hatches/rims from both VCP and NDK. They also carry foot
pumps. Their web site isn't set up all that great, but if you click to
download the complete retail price list, it will have everything. You
can call them to place an order

GRO sells, I believe, only Henderson pumps which are quite expensive.
I purchased mine through them. The Guzzler is rated higher and is
cheaper but I haven't compared the two side by side so can't say if
it is indeed better. I'd love to hear if someone has compared them as
I need to buy a second pump for a different boat.

GRO may be selling other pumps now as well though the weren't when I
got mine several years back. In any case, they do sell alot of nice
stuff.

There is a great articles on installing a foot pump at:

GRO still sells the Henderson, which is what comes as original equipment if
you by an NDK or VCP boat. You can also by material to make a foam
bulkhead from GRO. Note that the strum box (if you don't make your own) is
extra. Instructions are non-existent. Anyone who would like detailed
instructions for how to install the Henderson pump, can email me off line.

Kenny,

You should really go back a ways and see what Strosacker did to the Arctic
Hawk. I did the same thing more or less at the same time and I don't think
you need to burden yourself with a retractable skeg. A simple 3 foot tapering
fixed skeg (hull extension) is a. easier to fabricate and b. all you need. I
tried to get the address using roll or die but the closest I could get was a
Black Plague Game. Ahhh... Mr. Strosacker?

As far as a foot pump is concerned, do you intend to replace that "foam,
rubber, or whatever" bulkhead Wilderness uses with ????, plywood, or just a
frame to fit the pump? I was thinking along the same lines but decided to go
with an electric pump instead. Gives me a bit more time to "study" the
subject before I have to get down to work. Can't rush into these things you
know.

Kevin

I am definitely going to replace those foam things that WS. calls bulkheads-
I am thinking fiberglass. I have to admit to being a pretty big fan of
"retractibility"- if it is too big a job for me- I will have it done.
I appreciate the comments.

That shouldn't be too difficult for you to do. Everyone that builds a
stitch-n-glue or cedar strip boat has done it.

It'll be even easier if you're careful cutting out the foam bulkheads so
that you can use them as patterns. Just lay out the patterns on some good
quality plywood (1/4" luan should work fine). Cut out the bulkheads proud
and then pre-fit them into place, sanding off the high spots until you get
a reasonable tight fit. Then fiberglass both sides. You can pre-drill all
the holes for the foot pump before permanently putting the bulkhead into
place. The bulkhead can be put into place using a few dabs of hot glue
then permanently using a mixture of epoxy resin and filler (i.e. cabosil)
to create a fillet around the edge of the bulkhead and the inside of the
hull. Some just use a good silicon sealant like 3M 4200/5200. Check out
some of the kayak building sites and you'll get a good idea of what it will
take to accomplish.

The Bosworth pumps(www.bosworth.thomasregister.com) seem to be popular,
although I have no direct experience with them. Most people use the
400S or the 450S with the light-action spring. I believe they are
available through West Marine.
